How to make your profile wall private on Facebook and why you should do it

Facebook can be a valuable business tool for entrepreneurs who are prepared to invest the effort and resources to maintain a social-media presence. As your page grows, however, there may be times when you'll want to restrict access to your wall. You can select who's able to see your wall in your Privacy Settings, choosing individual contacts or lists of contacts and granting them access. Facebook users who aren't listed will simply see a blank wall.

Click the second pull-down menu in the dialog box labeled "Who can see what others post on your profile?" The resulting menu will list the options: "Friends," "Friends of Friends," "Only Me" and "Custom." Choose "Custom." Another dialog box will open, allowing you to choose individual users or lists of users who may see posts on your Wall. When you are finished, click "Save Changes" to return to the previous dialog box.

Repeat the same process for the next pull-down menu for "Who can see posts you've been tagged in on your profile?" Two additional options in this dialog box have no pull-down menu but allow you to control posts in which you are tagged. Set these options to "On."

Quick tip: If you don't want anyone to see your profile ever again, consider deactivating or deleting your Facebook account instead. It's a more extreme measure, but still the best way to pull your data off the site.

The options we talked about above control your entire Facebook account. But whenever you post something, you can give it its own privacy settings. This means you can keep your profile private but make a single post public, and vice versa.

To hide likes on Facebook, go to your profile and select More > Likes. Select the three-dot menu and select Edit the Privacy of Your Likes.

To view what your Facebook profile looks like to the public, go to your profile, select the three dots under your cover photo, and select View As. Select Exit View As to go back.

To send a private message on Facebook, go to a profile and select Message, or select the New Message icon (the speech bubble) at the top of the site. On a mobile device, use the Messenger app.

Messages about protecting your copyright or privacy rights on Facebook by posting a particular legal notice to your Facebook wall have been periodically circulated on that social network for many years, and all of them are variants of an older rumor holding that posting a similar notice on a website would protect that site's operators from prosecution for piracy:

Brad Shear, a Washington-area attorney and blogger who is an expert on social media, said the message [that Facebook users are posting to their walls is] "misleading and not true." He said that when you agree to Facebook's terms of use you provide Facebook a "non-exclusive, transferable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any content you post. You do not need to make any declarations about copyright issues since the law already protects you. The privacy declaration [in this message] is worthless and does not mean anything."

The timeline/news feed concepts are confusing for most because they are intertwined with two other important, yet often confusing, Facebook concepts: the difference between a profile and a page, and the complexity of Facebook's privacy settings, which impact the visibility of your profile timeline to other Facebook users. A good introductory explanation of this is given by Will Holloway:

The Timeline is a space on every Facebook user's profile page that allows friends to post messages for the user and the user's friends to see. The Facebook community calls these messages 'wall (or timeline) posts.' Depending upon the user's privacy settings, the timeline posts can be private, but most people keep them at the default setting, which is public. 2ff7e9595c
